Class Dates: 2/5/17, 3/5/17, 4/2/17, 4/30/17, 6/4/17

All levels welcome space is limited to 9 people. Priority will be given to those taking entire 5-part series.

Part 1: COLOR – 2/5/17 Color is one of the basic foundations to making great art.  You will learn basic color principles of hue, value, intensity, and contrast. I will guide you through a series of color studies using organic form as our inspiration, and moving to the abstract in both paint and collage.

Part 2: SHAPE – 3/5/17 Explore shape by rendering an organic object in multiple ways, beginning with a basic contour drawing, exploring line, contrast, repetition, and balance. The day will combine drawing, printing and collage.

Part 3: PATTERN – 4/2/17 Using the natural world as a jumping off point, you will carve a rubber stamp and create stencils to repeat shapes and create pattern. The day will be devoted to pattern via print methods and collage.

Part 4: LINE & TEXTURE – 4/30/17 Make your mark, generate lines with a variety of making tools, from traditional to found objects, from paint to print. We will loosen up and combine collage and paint techniques to explore abstract art expression.

Part 5: VOICE – 6/4/17 This day is for you to explore your creative voice. All the elements of the previous classes will be there for you to call upon to create unique, expressive pieces of art. The day will be devoted to nurturing your unique voice. Using all the accumulated wisdom from the color, shape, pattern and line workshops, I will guide you to the next step in your creative journey.

Each class will include demonstrations of technique, personalized check-ins, individualized support, and prompts for continuing your creative journey through the month until the next class.

A 9x12-inch mixed media sketchbook is recommended, which should cost less than $10. All other in-class materials are included in the price. However, if you wish to continue your explorations with optional prompts in between monthly workshops, you will need to purchase materials for your at-home explorations. A list of materials for monthly optional homework will be sent upon enrollment. For the duration of the 5-month class we will have a group Facebook page just for us. You will be able to post photos of what you are doing, and I'll check in to provide on-going support and feedback.

Challenge yourself in two media at a workshop combining the visual and poetic arts. Over the course of this two-day intensive, we will work back and forth between building a poem and creating an art book. I will guide you through the process of creating a multipage collage accordion book and Poet Laurie Glover will lead you through the process of writing a multi-stanza, repeating-form poem called a pantoum that can become part of your book. Ranch Resident Artist Lisa Thorpe and Writing in Ordinary Time facilitator Laurie Glover have designed a series of steps through which non-artists and non-writers can stimulate their creativity in one area by linking it with another. We will use poetry writing exercises to inspire your creation of a book and use the choices you make in creating that book to further your poetry writing. For examples of the kind of book we mean, take a look at this page on the website. Participants can stay over night on Saturday or attend the workshop only.
