Marbling on Fabric

March 29, 2020 1- 4 pm
The Bishop’s Ranch Art Center
5297 Westside Road, Healdsburg CA
$55 all materials included

Spend the afternoon discovering the wonders of marbling on fabric! I will demonstrate how to make the thickened water base, how to mix the acrylic paints so they are light enough to float on the thickened water and how to manipulate the paints in different ways to make a variety of marbled patterns. You will experiment with small pieces (6x10”) fabric, and by the end of the afternoon you will have 8-12 marbled pieces to take home and play with in your art or traditional quilting - finished fabric is washable and wonderful!

Join me for an intimate workshop to explore encaustic collage techniques. Create small collage pieces on wood using art papers, old maps, photos and other ephemera. The collage is then covered with hot encaustic medium (a mixture of resin and beeswax). The retreat includes demos of techniques and lots of time to play and experiment. All materials are included and no prior experience is needed.

Instruction on Saturday is from 10am-4pm, with a break for lunch. The evening will be left to you to read, relax and wander or return to the art center to explore on your own. Sunday morning, I will provide more instruction, and you can continue your creative pursuits until lunch. The workshop will conclude with a post-lunch sharing circle.

Come for a relaxing four-day creative retreat with me at The Bishop's Ranch. Each morning you will explore different surface design techniques playing with color, pattern and print. In the afternoon you will use your papers and fabric to create a composition that I call a “Visual Haiku” that explores composition and visual structure in an improvisational and playful way. This creative retreat is available to all levels of art explorers. The techniques in the retreat are designed for both fabric and mixed media artists. I will demo and have examples in both fabric and paper. By the end of the week each art explorer will go home with up to eight small “Visual Haiku” and a hand made surface design sampler book.

The mornings will be devoted to surface design techniques and play and each afternoon a different composition essential will be demonstrated. After the demo the afternoon will be structured to allow for free time to enjoy the pool, hiking trails, or relax and soak in the beauty of the Bishop’s Ranch. We will gather each evening before dinner for social hour and the evening are available for self-directed creative time in the art space or other leisure activity. All paint, print, stamp and stencil materials will be supplied – students will have a short materials list of paper and/or fabric to create on.
