Long Shadows

I’ve been observing the slow and gradual change of light as September passes.  There is a dusty darkness now when the alarm goes off at 6:30am that doesn’t encourage me to join the day like the summer sun does, all I am called to do these mornings is groan and pull the covers up more snugly.  Autumn is not officially here, the Autumnal Equinox is next Friday, but she has sent her messengers ahead to remind us of her coming and to urge us to ready our homes and our hearts.  The air is crisp in the morning and evening here, although the days are warm.  The most telling harbingers of autumn are the long shadows and the warm sunlight that mix and mingle amid the golden grasses of our California hills.  Both the morning (when there’s no fog) and evening sun stretch out with the most glorious warm tones, colors not to be seen in either the hot blaze of summer or the crisp, curt winter.  There seems to be a message there, especially at the end of the day to slow down and soak it in while it still lasts.  Mark the signs where you are,  a new bird song in the evenings long shadows, a whiff of cool air, or in your hotter climes maybe you can throw your windows open and shut off the AC, possibly even add a blanket to the bed. Pause, take note, pay homage, tomorrow will be slightly darker, daylight slightly shorter as the earth takes its journey, whirling gracefully around the sun in her inevitable dance toward the equinox.
