You Are My Cup Of Tea

I know it’s a rare thing when I don’t have much to say but this week I’m going to say it with pictures. I spent the week with 51 quilters here at The Bishop’s Ranch. The room was abuzz with the whirring of sewing machines and the swoosh of steam irons. Everyone was at her table working away, with breaks to wander the large pavilion hall to kibitz and admire, share and learn. It was a lovely, industrious week. Prior to Sunday’s start I had made a number of teacups and mugs using scraps of fabric from my stash as the base shape and then stenciled the defining detail on top. When I was all done I had about 25 cups to play with during the week. I made a table runner and placemats for my home and then this banner to offer up to the world. Lisa your images in particular are a wonderful embodiment of all that a cup of tea is to me – friendly, welcoming, easy to be with, and made with love.
In my family a cup of tea is essential for all gatherings and is believe to solve everything, or at least to make you feel like it solves everything.
I have just been back to the UK to be with my family to celebrate my dad’s life. A life that that recently ended rather suddenly after 76 years, the last 18 struggling with Parkinson Disease. A cup of tea was never not in my hand over in these past few weeks as we made arrangements, reminisced and laughed among the tears. Seeing these images on my return was very comforting.
Funnily enough I have been thinking about doing a painting project on similar lines for some time; maybe you will be my inspiration (once again) to actually get around to this.

Jane, I’m glad you had the time for tea, and family, celebration and tears….and tea again. I love the invitation of the cup image, whether it be coffee or tea or a martini glass for that matter, it seems to be an invitation to sit a relax and reflect. Tea thoughts must be in the air because there is a clothpaperscissors blog just started called tea on Tuesdays… which is going to have tea time related art every Tuesday we can see where that work goes.
