Today is the Winter Solstice. Day scurries past, rushing to get her errands done before Night enters, draped in black velvet streaked with moon shadows and star pricks, to sit upon the throne for this the longest night.
We must know the dark to know the light. In the recent rememberings of Mandela after his death there was a quote that struck me:
“As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.”― Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela knew the dark very well. And in knowing could with full confidence choose the light. We cannot know the light without the dark. Let the darkness embrace you then take up the match and light your lantern and let it shine!
