Example of encaustic collage piece to inspire this weekends participants
I’m teaching a two-day Encaustic Collage workshop this weekend at The Bishop’s Ranch where I am the Resident Artist. This class is one I’ve taught many times, so I have a good idea of how to organize the space and materials for success. One thing that I think makes everybody happy is to have things arranged and ready to get creative. While the creative process itself can sometimes feel magical and loose, for me at least, the magic comes from having everything in order, so my mind is free to be inspired. I try hard to give that balance to my students too, I want everything to be at their fingertips with stimulating materials and careful demos to guide them to finding their genuine, creative voice in a new medium. Wish me and my 12 art adventurers luck!

In the busy mix of the weekend I’ll try to take some action shots of my students at work to share at the end of the weekend. Hope you make some time for your creative self too!

Oh, how I wish I was one of the lucky 12 this weekend. Your email popped up 8 hours into my 12+ hour work day and it was the perfect pick me up. To see all those wonderful materials brought memories of happy times with you in your studio (albeit the old one). Don’t get me wrong, I love my current work adventure, but there are times in the day when my body reminds me that I’m not quite as young as the work demands. I look forward to returning to your studio to get creative with you again one day. in the meantime know that the skills and insights you have given me both in the studio and via your blog are often used in my work here in Torrance, including the putting things in order and being prepared. Thank you for your continued inspiration.

Lisa, I want to take your class at Craft Napa. How toxic are the glue and the wax??

The glues and wax are not toxic. If the encaustic medium is not heated properly it can smoke but I use low heat crock pots to heat and never have a smoke issue- I look forward to meeting you at Craft Napa!
